A large Chinese black lacquer box, exquisitely decorated with oriental scenes and Mandarin poetry.
Canton, Qing dynasty,  early 19th century.

Why we like it

An exquisite example of oriental decorative art, also useful to store small objects, jewellery, etc. with gusto. Beautiful poetry too, please see translations below.

Provenance and decoration

A virtually idential box, without doubt a pair to the present example, decorated with the same motifs  in a symmetrical manner, and most likely commissioned together as a symbolic gift, is illustrated in A. Clarke and J. O'Kelly, Antique Boxes, Tea Caddies & Society, second edition, 2018, fig. 247.

The boxes are exquisitely decorated with episodes from the battles of the Three Kingdoms, which took place in early third century A.D. By the end of 207, after a victorious campaign, culminating in the Battle of White Wolf Mountain, Cao Cao, a minister and commander under the last Han emperor, who held the de facto control of the state, achieved complete dominance of the North China Plain and half of the Chinese population. The sides of the boxes are decorated with scenes of notable battles, while the tops depict Cao Cao sitting triumphantly in state against the backdrop of screens, exquisitely calligraphed with classical poetry.

We were able to identify some of the poems exquisitely inscribed on the screens, that form the background of the palace scene, painted on the lid of the box.

Logical and easy to read
Format: Paperback
St. Pope John Paul II may have been a polymath, but his approach to explaining the metaphysical relationship of man and the human condition as it relates to theology and our relationship with God make this a great read!

Food for thought (and life) for ages to come
Format: Paperback
Blessed John Paul II shared with the whole world the fruit of years of lived life and deep reflection, prior to being elected Bishop of Rome. Anyone who wishes to delve into this work is in for a hard-earned yet worthy treat, as it is not always an easy read, but deeply satisfying. John Paul II's understudy and friend, Stanislaw Grygiel, once challenged the pope saying that few would actually understand what he taught. The Pope replied, "Some things just have to be said!" Thanks to Prof. Michael Waldstein, we have an excellent introduction and much-improved translation of this monumental work. As I said in the title, there is the pope's catecheses on the theology of the body much food for thought (and life...and love!) for ages to come. Blessed John Paul II, thank you and pray for us!

Good to use every night...I do.
If you suffer from dry mouth during the night, these are the perfect solution. I had tried rinses - they don't last. Sprays - they don't last. lozenges - don't last. Other tablets, only last a few hours. I can get about 8 hours relief with these. Contrary to other reviews, you do not suck on them like a lozenge...they won't last at all if you do it that way. Read the directions. They "adhere" to your back molars...don't drink or eat after putting them in...as both will either dislodge or reduce the effectiveness. However, when I don't use these, my mouth is miserable and so dry. These provide enough moisture throughout the night. The flavors aren't too bad. I've used the mint (not may favorite because I'm not a fan of mint flavor), orange and berry. I wish they had other flavors (cinnamon, licorice), but till then, I'll use these probably forever.
